Originated in the early 1980s by the Chamber of Commerce and Mayors Moore and Linn as a means to provide a single focus organization to deal with the first wave of deindustrialization First countywide public/private non partisan effort locally When the Growth Council started, there were only eight similar organizations now there are over one hundred. Today, there are 15,000 in the US competing for approximately 250 deals per year. Hired the first Executive Director, Tim Eckerle, in 1984 and secured IRS 501(c) 3 status soon after
